Gwen Powell
Gwen Powell is a 1991 COE in Handspinning Master recipient with a
specialty in Chinese Knot Art with Handspun.
Gwen learned to spin on Mother's Day 1981 after finding out she could not wear acrylics or
acetates. From designing doll clothes for younger sisters when 7 years
old, teaching basket weaving in her fourth grade class, founding the
Greater Los Angeles Spinning Guild in her early twenties to creating
custom knotted ornaments and tassels for the Sony and Warner Brothers
movie studios,
Gwen has incorporated teaching fiber arts into her busy
lifestyle. Though Gwen is database programmer by day, it is only a
means of supporting her passion for fiber.
Gwen believes all of her
life is intertwined with fiber from the feathers from her birds that
work themselves into her yarns to her fly fishing that led to the design
and creation of a pheasant feather cape.
Gwen has been a past judge at
the LA County Fair, Antelope Valley Fair, Conference of Southern
California Handweavers and National Angora Rabbit Breeders Show. Gwen
has been teaching spinning and other fiber arts since 1984. She has
taught at home, at guilds, at conferences, South Bay Adult School and
Torrance Adult School.
Gwen lives in Torrance, California with her
husband, two cocker spaniels, cat and 40 colorful birds. You can see more of her work at www.mresource.com/sites/fiberarts
